![]() It’s always just a weird shadow that my mind turned into something else. to touch or hit the thing) but sometimes I still end up turning on my phone’s flashlight to figure out what the shadow is. Now I try to interact and prove to myself it is not actually real (i.e. Over the years I’ve trained myself not to react with fear but with recognition. And then every time, writhing 30 seconds, it fades into nothingness. I convince myself if I can touch it or if I can move and see it from different angles I can prove that it’s real. I can move around and try to touch what I’m seeing. What was so unsettling is that I would be seemingly so awake and alert as the hallucination happened, I was absolutely certain I couldn’t be imagining it. After googling it I recognized what it was. The frequency decreased for a few years but then it started happening often again. I would pull my covers over me and hide like a child (I was 21 at the time) or jump out of my bed and turn on the lights, or just scream bloody murder until someone came into my room to ask if I was okay. They were terrifying at first: cloaked figures in the corner of my room, spiders (always spiders) falling on me, bugs crawling out of my pillow all over me. I’ve been experiencing hypnagogic hallucinations for at least 5 years now. That's when I found out this shit is hereditary, and guess who I'd gotten it from? We BOTH wake up screaming about the vent smoke-monstering its way down the wall to eat us. This one place we stayed at was a really run-down motel, with those air-conditioner vents high up on the walls that always make me think of Sherlock Holmes and the snakes in the vents (note: primed to be freaked out about those things). One memorable time, my mom and I were doing a road trip across a few states, stopping in hotels along the way. SO gives me weird look, tries not to laugh at me (because I get extremely angry at people who laugh when I'm asleep, apparently), and does a dutiful search for spiders in the cushions. ![]() Winja, apparently sound asleep, jumping up and screaming, "Get it off GET IT OFF GET IT OFF" while flailing around, tossing pillows, and nopeing the fuck across the room. Combined with my tendency to sleepwalk, this usually manifests as: It usually takes me a minute or two to wake up. So Reddit, does anyone else have hypnagogic hallucinations on a regular basis (or at all)? None of my friends or family experience these, so I'm not sure if this is common or not. I realize once that light turns on that I was probably more half-asleep half-awake than fully awake, but it is still extremely disconcerting, and often leaves me shaking. I will continue to see them until I get up, purposefully walk to a light, and turn it on. The scariest part is that I feel awake when I experience these hallucinations. Once I saw a plastic bag in the shape of a tiny man crawling across the floor that I literally had to jump over in order to get to the lights. As soon as I see them I know they aren't real, and they're usually not scary images, but they still freak me out every time. Usually I see things moving on the walls - sometimes bugs, sometimes balloons, sometimes animals, sometimes just vague forms - but they're always moving and they always seem to disappear into the wall. Mine are almost always visual, and happen on average about 2-3 nights per week (often multiple times per night), usually just after I've started to fall asleep. People can have visual, auditory, or sensory hallucinations (a quick google search will give more information).
